Interview Interaction Description
My interview with Brinnae occurred on Thursday November 12, 2015 and was incredibly informal, but yielded lots of information. First, she explained to me that there was indeed a terminology or jargon within the field. When asked about the jargon, she said “Yes, most anything technical. Like EKGs, EMGs, ECGs. There’s lots of jargon.” When asked what she studied in the biomedical field she responded that initially, you take classes pertaining to all aspects of biomedical engineering. However, as you progress in the field you can choose a specific discipline, and she chose to go into biomedical instrumentation. She then proceeded to tell me about her research on sleep studies at Duke, her research with an asthma monitor, how she manufactured a photoplethysmograph, and how she spends on average two to three hours a night in the lab. Finally, when asked about the relationship with other members in the field, she responded that initially she was intimidated by the senior members of the field, but very quickly she was interacting with most everyone in a very friendly way. They appeared to be very helpful, and if you were interested in something, there was someone there willing to help you.
